The Louis I. Michelson Memorial Archives

 

The Saint John Jewish Historical Museum collects, preserves and shares material on the history of all aspects of Jewish life in Saint John from 1858 to the present day. This includes minute books, reports, correspondence, legal documents, invitations, programs, newspaper clippings, family trees, photographs, art work and artifacts. Material is organized into the following categories: Synagogue, Organizations, Community, Personal History, Photographs, Holocaust, and Jewish Museum.

 

A portion of the archival holdings – documents and papers - were transferred to the New Brunswick Museum Archives and Research Library in October 2014 and are housed in their Collections and Research Centre at 228 Lancaster Avenue in Saint John. Photographs, art work and artifacts remain in the custody of the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum and may be consulted by appointment (506-633-1833 / sjjhm@nbnet.nb.ca).

Dr. Moses I. Polowin Memorial Library


The library was created in 1990 with books from the former Shaarei Zedek Library and donations made to the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum. The collection reflects a broad range of titles related to the wider Jewish experience. Sections include Judaism, Israel, History (Ancient, Canada, United States), Holocaust, Biography, Art, Food and Fiction. Readers can find books published in English, Hebrew and Yiddish.

 

The Library is open year round by appointment and is open to students and general readers. Limited borrowing privileges are available.

 

In 1996, the Library was recognized by the Church and Synagogue Library Association of Portland, Oregon as an Outstanding Congregational Library.
